Our History

The Chietón Morén museum and store was founded in the indigenous community of Boruca by artisan women seeking a space in San José to sell their creations directly. It opened on July 26, 2010, and in June 2012, the Chietón Morén Cultural Association was established. It was initially comprised of representatives from 17 indigenous territories in Costa Rica, and has grown to include 20 territories today.

Currently, the project involves 250 artisans, 85% of whom are women. The new facility, located 25 meters south of the southeast corner of the National Museum, was inaugurated on January 6, 2017. That same year, the Chietón Morén Cultural Association was awarded the "Good Practices in the Social Solidarity Economy" recognition by Banco Popular.

The project is part of the National Guide to Museums of Costa Rica, promoted by the Costa Rican Tourism Institute, and is included in various international tourism guides.

  • Economic Support for Artisans

Many indigenous families have seen their quality of life improve thanks to the direct sale of their products, without intermediaries and at fair prices.

  • Awareness and Education

Through workshops, talks, and exhibitions, hundreds of people have been raised aware of the importance of indigenous cultures and the need to protect their rights.

  • Preservation of Traditions

By providing a space for the sale of authentic handicrafts, we have contributed to the continuity of ancestral techniques that have been passed down from generation to generation.

  • Community Building

Chietón Morén is not just a store, it is a meeting space where artisans, volunteers, and visitors can share experiences and learning, strengthening intercultural respect.
